Course can reduce risk A lifestyle modification program introduced to Kyabram can help people lose weight sensibly with good advice and peer support, according to Kyabram doctor Michael McQueen-Thomson. National obesity figures show 62 per cent - or more than 13 million Australians - are overweight or obese, with 68 per cent of adult men and 55 per cent of adult women overweight or obese. "These figures are alarming and just too high," Dr McQueenThomson said yesterday. "Being overweight and obese puts people in a higher risk category for many chronic health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke," he said. In an attempt to turn this around in Kyabram, the Goulburn Valley Division of General Practice (GVGPs) runs a program called Life! for people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The program, run over a sixmonth period, aims to prevent diabetes through nutrition and exercise. The next program in Kyabram starts in May. GVGPs started running lifestyle modification programs five years ago, for people who were ready to change their life and become healthier, but perhaps needed some help and guidance getting there. A past participant from the course increased his physical activity level, modified his diet by reducing his intake of takeaway food and reducing his portion sizes, and lost 5 kg in six months. He reports having more energy and his blood results have significantly improved. To be eligible for the Life! program, people need to ask their doctor, complete a risk assessment and be referred to the program. About 275 adults develop diabetes every day and it is estimated that the total number of Australians living with diabetes and pre-diabetes is 3.2 million. Make an appointment to see your GP today. Both Kyabram Regional Clinic and Dr Peter Tisdall's rooms will be happy to assess your risk and eligibility for this local program. For more information call the Life! program team at GVGPs on 5831 5399.
